Collection of biometrics not yet affecting border-crossing times, official says

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced it would begin gathering biometric information from non-citizens at ports of entry, airports and cruise ship terminals starting on Dec. 26.

CBP has said it will gather the data as people enter and leave the U.S.

One of the biggest concerns, shared by Joaquín Luken of the Smart Border Coalition, is that the screenings would delay border-crossing times in both directions.

“Until now, in the short-term, it hasn’t happened,” he said. “We have not seen delays at border crossings due to the lack of technology and adequate infrastructure. Right now if you cross on foot or in a car, they are not taking biometrics.”…
