Homestead Exemption can be claimed on 2025-2023 tax returns

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Back in November 2025, Texas voters approved increasing the homestead exemption from $100,000 to $140,000 for tax purposes. To claim the homestead exemption, you must live in the home you are claiming the exemption for.

CEO of the Greater El Paso Association of Realtors, Tony Delgado, joined us on the KTSM Nine News at Noon show to break down what this means for you.

Delgado says the taxes you filed in 2023, 2024, and 2025 all qualify for the increase in the homestead exemption. All you have to do is go to your Central Appraisal District and have them apply the additional $40,000.

It’s meant to reduce the tax burden on homeowners. Going back to 2023 could equal a several-hundred-dollar refund for homeowners. On average in Texas, 5.7 million homeowners will save an average of $484 per year…
