DA Montoya says felony, misdemeanor case load has dropped by nearly 2,000 since he took office

Update (4:16 PM): At his news conference today, DA James Montoya said that the number of pending felony and misdemeanor cases has dropped by 1,937. As of December 2025, the number of pending cases was 9,950, according to Montoya.

Montoya said that his goal for the upcoming year is to hold more jury trials.

“I’m really proud of the progress our office has made moving cases, and being in the courtroom. The feeling that we are making progress is clear in the data,” Montoya said, adding, “It might not seem like a lot, but I have about 80 attorneys working on 10,000 cases at a time.”…
