Bowie High student lawsuit resulted in El Paso Border Patrol changes

Paul Strelzin, the radio host and sports announcer who earned the nickname “The Mouth” for his antics as an announcer for the El Paso Diablos, also was a longtime El Paso educator. He was principal of Bowie High School from 1992-1997, when tensions between the school and the Border Patrol were high.

Strelzin’s complaints to the school board and a class-action lawsuit by Bowie High School students and employees against the Border Patrol in 1992 led to a settlement in federal court with an agreement that El Paso agents would not detain people just because they look Hispanic.
