Friday afternoon turned tense along Cliff Drive as Lamar Elementary School and nearby El Paso High were placed on lockdown because of a situation in the surrounding area. Teachers kept students inside their classrooms and continued lessons while authorities responded. District officials said all students and staff were safe and described the lockdown as a precautionary step.

In a statement to KVIA, El Paso Independent School District said, “All students and staff are safe, and the lockdown is being implemented as a precaution. Instruction is continuing within classrooms at this time.” A district spokesperson declined to share any additional details about the nature of the situation.
