Championship at Sunland Park gets back on track this weekend

SUNLAND PARK – The 24th running of the $350,000 Grade 1 Championship at Sunland Park, which was scheduled to be run last weekend, will be held Saturday as the headline race of an 11-race program.

After a winter storm forced races to be halted for more than a week at Sunland Park, track conditions are much more favorable and weather forecasts call for much better conditions on Saturday.

A dozen of the nation’s top older quarter horses are entered for the Championship at Sunland Park, the centerpiece of a stakes-loaded program that also features seven trials for the Grade 1 West Texas Derby, as well as a pair of quarter horse stakes races for New Mexico-breds…
