Borderland ‘Hangout’ Ends In Driveway Murder Rap For 25-Year-Old

A 25-year-old man is behind bars this week after a man was found dead in a driveway in Anthony, New Mexico, turning what neighbors say started as a casual hangout into a homicide case now under active review by prosecutors.

Neighbors discovered the victim, later identified as Joseph Ramirez, in the 1020 block of Bullock Road near the Anthony Country Club. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing while prosecutors examine the evidence gathered so far.

According to Doña Ana County booking records, 25-year-old Axel Fabian Herrera-Munoz was booked on March 26 on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated battery that may have caused death or great bodily harm. The county entry lists an arrest on March 25 at about 11:28 p.m. and shows Herrera-Munoz is being held without bond. The record also notes a magistrate warrant associated with the aggravated-battery count and a district-court warrant for the murder charge.

Neighbors Describe Tense ‘Hangout’ Before Shooting

Witnesses told investigators the shooting happened during a “hangout” on the night of March 20 and that Ramirez had been acting angry, pacing and searching his car for something he said was stolen, according to KDBC. Those witnesses identified the suspect as “Tucan,” said he threatened people at the scene and described him as routinely armed and reportedly involved in smuggling. Investigators summarized those interviews in police documents that helped lead them to Herrera-Munoz as a suspect.
