Teen Nabbed After Weapon Scare at El Paso School

A routine Tuesday at IDEA Horizon Vista ended with a 14-year-old student in custody after administrators reported a weapon on campus. An off-duty El Paso County Sheriff’s deputy assigned to the school was flagged down, recovered the item and, according to officials, handled the situation without incident. The campus was placed on hold while staff and law enforcement checked for any further threats, and classes resumed once the scene was cleared.

According to KDBC, the sheriff’s office said the incident was reported at about 1:57 p.m. The deputy took the juvenile and the weapon into custody without incident, then transported the student to the El Paso County Juvenile Probation Department. Sheriff Oscar Ugarte said, “This incident highlights the importance of quick action and coordination.”

IDEA’s response

IDEA Public Schools told KDBC that campus leaders and the campus officer searched, confiscated the prohibited item and contacted law enforcement. The statement said the campus was placed on hold while police investigated and emphasized that “all students and staff are safe.” The district directed further questions to the sheriff’s department, noting that the matter remains under investigation.

Local context

Schools in the El Paso area regularly drill for emergencies, and Horizon City police ran an active-shooter training at IDEA Horizon Vista last summer, as reported by Hoodline. The outlet also noted a brief campus hold at Eastlake High in January after a weapon was recovered. The swift response at Horizon Vista fits into that broader regional focus on rapid intervention to keep students and staff safe.
