Erie, Pennsylvania, is a great place to enjoy time on the water. Perched along the Great Lake that shares its name, Erie County is home to 15 beaches and over a dozen marinas and boat launches across its 77 miles of Lake Erie shoreline. But while Lake Erie is by far the largest body of water in northwestern Pennsylvania, it’s certainly not the only destination for boaters and anglers in the area. Head about 15 miles south of Erie, and you’ll find the lesser-known Lake LeBoeuf, a 72-acre natural glacial lake that’s a favorite year-round fishing spot for locals.
Lake LeBoeuf is an open-system lake, meaning there are no dams blocking Trout Run, which feeds it from the north, or LeBoeuf Creek, its outlet to the south. It is a naturally occurring kettle lake formed by glacial activity during the last Ice Age and is one of the eight glacial lakes in northwestern Pennsylvania. Wetlands line its western shore, while a swampy island sits near its center. An area known as Hidden Lake around the northern inlet is popular for duck hunting. Fishing enthusiasts know the lake for tiger muskellunge, a hybrid of the northern pike and muskellunge. Although tiger muskies are now raised in hatcheries and stocked throughout Pennsylvania waterways, Lake LeBoeuf is one of only two spots where they have been found occurring naturally. Despite this unique claim to fame, Lake LeBoeuf remains little known outside northwestern Pennsylvania, making it an appealing destination for off-the-beaten-path travelers.
Fishing and boating on Lake LeBoeuf
For many, lake fun in Erie County is synonymous with Presque Isle, Pennsylvania’s only seashore. With over 3 million visitors a year, Presque Isle consistently ranks among the most visited state parks in Pennsylvania. Lake LeBoeuf is popular with locals but doesn’t see nearly as many crowds, making it a quieter, more peaceful place to get on the water.
Lake LeBoeuf has a free public boat ramp off Hazel Street along the northern shore. The facilities are minimal, consisting of a parking lot, a portable restroom, and a wooden dock beside the ramp, so you’ll want to bring whatever supplies you need. The lake’s calm water makes it suitable for kayakers and canoeists of all experience levels.
