What to expect at the Erie Kennel Club show featuring more than 1,000 dogs this weekend

Dog lovers are in for a real treat this weekend as a significant number of dogs, handlers, groomers and vendors will all be present for the Erie Kennel Club All-Breed Dog Show at the Bayfront Convention Center, 1 Sassafras Pier.

The show is expected to draw more than 1,000 dogs with 151 different breeds represented, all competing to see who will win coveted titles.

How are dogs judged in an AKC competition?

Three competitions — Best in Show, Obedience and Rally — will take place during the show.

Best in Show is where the dog is judged according to what it is bred to do as each breed has an ideal standard.

The winner from each breed will move on to a higher competition, which will be a group placement. There are seven major groups in the AKC dog showing. This will narrow the dogs down from 1,000 to seven.

The dog that takes first in each group will compete for the title of Best in Show.

The Obedience segment involves dogs getting judged on how well they take verbal and non-verbal commands — including sit, stay and down — from handlers.
