When conditions are right, Presque Isle is snowshoeing haven. Here’s how you can try it.

Presque Isle State Park attracts tens of thousands of visitors each week from Memorial Day through Labor Day, but the park doesn’t close when summer ends. This is the fourth in a monthly series about activities and events at Presque Isle in the fall, winter and spring.

Peggy and Rock Hardesty waited almost two years to walk on top of the snow at Presque Isle State Park.

The Erie couple started snowshoeing in late 2021, after Peggy Hardesty borrowed a pair of snowshoes from her daughter. She liked it so much that she told her husband about snowshoeing and Rick Hardesty decided to join her for winter walks.

“I just like everything about it, especially at Presque Isle,” said Rick Hardesty, 69. “You don’t have to follow the trails, you can just go walking through the woods.”

Besides a pair of snowshoes, the only requirement is at least five or six inches of snow. The white stuff has been in short supply for the past year, as relatively little snow had fallen on the peninsula until mid-January.
