( WJET/WFXP ) — The U.S. Brig Niagara is in much better condition than earlier this month — that’s according to a new update from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC).
After winter weather brought in strong winds that damaged the Brig Niagara’s cover earlier this month , repair work was expected to occur through the last week of January as materials arrived and equipment rental was arraigned the week prior.

Now, a new statement from a PHMC official about the repair work reads:
“ As anticipated, the cover has been safely and successfully installed this week (1/29–2/1). Final work is expected to be completed today (2/2), including equipment and material cleanup and cleaning, tightening, and tidying up the edges of the cover and deck entrances.
Under the supervision of the Erie Maritime Museum Site Administrator, the project was led by one of PHMC’s most experienced project supervisors, with further assistance provided by staff from our Division of Architecture & Preservation.
