Erie City Council tables proposed bike lane parking exceptions related to Greengarden project

Erie City Council has put the brakes on proposed amendments to a city ordinance that currently prohibits parking in bike lanes – a move related to a proposed designated bikeway along a portion of Greengarden Road and Greengarden Boulevard opposed by a number of residents in that area.

City Council, at its regular meeting on Wednesday morning tabled the ordinance amendments, which were on council’s agenda for a first reading.

The amendments would have allowed for a number exceptions to the city’s existing bike lane ordinance, allowing emergency vehicles, repair/delivery services, school buses and others to use bike lanes for parking and or pickups/drop-offs.

The amendments were proposed as a compromise to address the concerns of Greengarden residents opposed to the project.

But Council members Ed Brzezinski, Maurice Troop, Tyler Titus and Mel Witherspoon voted to table the ordinance. Brzezinski said council needs more overall details about the project.

“I think we’re moving too fast on some of these things,” Brzezinski said.
