This Black History Month, we took a closer look at a neighborhood that was once on West 11th Street.
Nearly 60 years ago, more than 300 homes were demolished and many of those homes were owned by African Americans.
Local golfers enjoy unseasonably warm weather with first round of the year
One woman, who grew up there, described the neighborhood as a safe haven.
“I remember my mother saying that they’re going to come through here and start tearing down homes, for what? Redevelopment, we’re going to move into better neighborhoods. Well, what could be a better neighborhood than what we have?” Recalled Cheryl Horton-Jong.
Cheryl Horton-Jong is talking about the neighborhood she grew up in on West 11th Street that no longer exists.
In 1964 the redevelopment authority demolished 314 properties along West 11th from Sassasfras Street to Liberty. She said it was a close-knit community with African American, Italian, and Polish families.
