Millcreek official says buildings on West 8th will be leveled before the eclipse

A timeline has been announced for the demolition of buildings in the so-called gateway to Presque Isle.

Township Supervisor Kim Clear said the blighted buildings at the corner of Peninsula Dr. and West 8th St. will begin coming down in the first two weeks of March. The former Joe Roots, Sandbar, Manor Motel, and a hotel strip outside the Bel-Aire will all be leveled.

The concrete will also be torn out and grass planted. The aim is to make the properties more attractive to developers and boost business for the entire corridor.

“I think that this is a good sign for the future. I think this is something positive for us to look forward to. We already have developers contacting us and expressing interest,” Clear said.

“It impacts us because it’s gonna drive a lot more I think local and obviously out of towners because we have the Presque Isle right next to us. We’ve been looking forward to the Gateway project since we moved here,” said Ashley Messenger, owner of Underdog Barbeque.
