Mercy Center for Women holds ‘souper’ sweet event for Erie’s homeless community

A local organization was spreading a “ladle of love” this Valentine’s Day.

The Mercy Center for Women gathered at Perry Square for a community soup and bread lunch.

Mayor Joe Schember, along with those from the Mercy Center, gave out cups of their homemade soups and “blessing bags” filled with hygiene items.

The Mercy Center was inspired by the double holiday to focus on those in need outside of their organization.

“Now as we’re getting into spring, it’s still cold and there still is a need for this. The point in time count just showed us that there are more unsheltered homeless people in our community than before and we really just need to do things to provide some comfort and some warmth for them,” said Katie Confer, director of marketing and advancement at the Mercy Center for Women.

UPMC Health Plan, EUMA and the Community Blood Bank donated items to the event.
