Gasoline fuels fully involved garage fire in City of Erie

( WJET/WFXP ) — Multiple crews were called out to the 900 block of Liberty Street Thursday night for a fully involved structure fire that required nearby buildings to be evacuated.

According to Erie County 911, calls first went out for the fire at 10:44 p.m. with five crews being called to the scene along with the fire inspector.

Initial reports from the scene indicated the possibility of natural gas, but later confirmed the presence of multiple gallons of liquid gasoline and an air compressor in the garage, causing crews to evacuate nearby buildings.

The garage was also described as being “compartmentalized” which made it harder for crews to put out the fire from outside.

So far, no injuries have been reported.

“That wind would have been terrible if this had been at 3 o’clock in the morning and they didn’t discover it when they did we would have a pretty good house fire to deal with too, but luckily. someone discovered the fire and the garage is totally destroyed but at least no one is hurt and it didn’t get into the house,” said Deputy Chief John Herrmann, City of Erie Fire Department.
