Mellon Heritage Foundation unveils new veterans wellness center in North East

Dozens of veterans gathered in North East for the dedication of Mellon Heritage Foundation’s new veterans outreach and wellness center.

Veterans around the region were invited to witness and celebrate the beginning of new life in North East.

The Mellon Heritage Foundation held a ceremony and flag-raising to formally dedicate the new center to veterans.

The property formally belonged to Mercyhurst University, and 66 acres will be shared between vets and first responders.

“This campus has been here since the late 1800s and here we are today in 2024 and it’s still alive. It still has a heartbeat and hopefully for years to come,” said Joe Benacci, director of Erie County Veterans Services.

Richard Mellon and his wife Melanie purchased the property a couple of months ago and said it was an easy decision.

“We saved this borough and township of North East from a hardship that they could not house illegal aliens here, especially unaccompanied young males,” said M. Richard Mellon, Mellon Heritage Foundation.
