PHMC announces Brig Niagara repair plans, hopes to be ready for 2025

( WJET/WFXP ) — The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) announced they’ve made a two-phase plan to make all the necessary repairs to the U.S. Brig Niagara, saying it will all be done in time to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.

The PHMC announced on Wednesday the Niagara needs repairs to the structure, planking, and systems taking place at a shipyard, likely in Cleveland.

The PHMC also said they’re consulting with former captains Walter Rybka and Wesley Heerssen to help with those plans while the ship awaits transport.

Phase one of repairs will consist of replacing the ship’s two propellers, one of which broke off in 2023 ending her season, along with engine improvements while working with the Coast Guard to get the necessary reviews and approvals.

The PHMC said the Niagara will need two custom-built, five-blade, variable-pitch propellers, which puts the estimated shipyard date at the end of August this year. They anticipate phase one to last one to two weeks.
