Erie residents have a shot at seeing a few meteors

Meteorologist Tom Atkins predicts a nice and mild night on Monday. Although only 10-20 meteors per hour are expected from the Orionids this year, you may see a few after midnight from the southwest to high in the sky. The weather will certainly be cooperating with good visibility and very mild temps.

Astronomers recommend getting out 30 minutes ahead of time to let your eyes adjust. Also if you’re spending that kind of time outdoors, a lawn chair or any kind of reclining chair (or a blanket lying on the ground) will save your neck and upper back from stiffness and pain that could result from standing upright and craning your head back for extended periods of time.

The waning Hunter’s Moon as well as the limited amount of meteors expected will limit this year’s display from being a spectacular show. But the heavens are easily seen tonight without real chill air to be worried about
