Golden Apple Award: Robin Gilson – South Hills Child Development Center

A lot has changed in the world of education over the 30 years this week’s Golden Apple award-winning teacher has been in the classroom.

This week Lou Baxter visits South Hills Child Development Center in Millcreek where Robin Gilson is in her 31st year as a kindergarten teacher.

What she teaches and what these young people learn at this age has changed over her decades in the classroom.

“You know the kids are reading, doing addition and subtraction, learning all their important social skills, doing presentations, and becoming confident little boys and little girls. When they go into first grade, they have a good foundation and feel good about themselves,” said Robin Gilson, Golden Apple teacher.

Gilson takes a multicultural approach to education, teaching about other countries and customs around the world. It’s not too much, she said, for these young minds.

“Oh, their little brains are like sponges. This is the time to teach them a language, teach them to play a musical instrument because they’re constantly learning and craving more and more. When they grasp concepts easily, I just want to keep teaching them more and more,” Gilson said.
