Crews fight large brush fire overnight leaving a path of destruction in its wake

Girard, Pa ( WJET/WFXP ) — Crews spent hours overnight fighting a multi-acre fire in Girard.

Crews were dispatched to the location after multiple 911 calls were received just before midnight. One caller reported hearing explosions and another reported a fire was spreading towards their home.

Upon arrival, crews reported a heavily involved area with active fire and requested additional engines and trucks from several surrounding departments to help contain the fire.

It took crews nearly three hours to contain the fire, with strong winds and treacherous terrain making the task even more challenging.

Two structures and two vehicles were involved in the fire, the structures were found to have already collapsed upon arrival. The fire covered multiple acres of leaves and brush, and firefighters remained on the scene to ensure all hot spots were cleared. At this time, there is no further information available, and no cause has been identified.

Officials are urging people to not burn, as it is extremely dry. Additionally, moderate to strong winds will exist over the next couple of days which will make any fire hard to contain.
