Herman’s Cafe — a venerable Erie tavern, where the old sign hung on the building for years after the business was sold and renamed Scooter’s Lounge — has a new owner.
Kulwant “Lucky” Singh, who is well known for the 10 Speed Check convenience store locations that he owns in the Erie area, bought the building at 2802 Old French Road in October.
What’s next for the property?
Singh, who paid $245,000 for the property, won’t be tearing down the building in the Marvintown neighborhood where Herman’s operated for 74 years. Instead, he plans to renovate the two-story structure and open later this year as Lucky’s Bar & Grill.
Singh, who said the $245,000 purchase price included the business’s liquor license, said he expects to spend another $150,000 in renovations.
“We have to renovate everything,” he said. “There’s a new kitchen and a lot of work inside. We want to put new things inside: pool tables and big TVs to watch big games.”
The story of an Erie tavern
Herman’s Cafe opened its doors in 1933, just weeks after the end of Prohibition. The building was even older, built in 1883, according to Erie County property records.
