Serious injuries and fatalities involving pedestrians continue to be an area of concern for authorities throughout Erie County.
It’s prompted action from the City of Erie and awareness efforts from law enforcement.
The total of fatalities from accidents on Erie roadways this year is now 10 — that’s double what it was in 2023.
“One death is too many in the city. We’ve had 10 this year. Ten fatalities and four of them are pedestrians,” said Jackie Spry, director of planning and neighborhood resources for the City of Erie.

That number is sounding alarms for city officials who are actively working to improve safety in the streets.
That plan is called “Safe Streets and Roads for All.”
It’s an effort to identify some of the most dangerous roads and intersections in the region, get perspective from the community and act to make those areas safer.
“That might be signalization, it might be a stop sign, it might be painted crosswalks, it might be a reconfiguration of the street, meaning that we narrow the street. These are all solutions to the safety concerns that we are hearing,” Spry said.
