A faith-based community group has taken its push for greater rights/protections for renters in the city of Erie — and increased responsibility for landlords — to Erie City Council.
The Erie Spiritual Coalition , during council’s regular meeting on Wednesday, presented a petition signed by more than 300 citizens in support of what’s being called a Tenant Bill of Rights.
The coalition wants council to endorse and formally approve legislation that helps protect renters from being exploited and ensures safer conditions at rental properties throughout Erie.
City Council has yet to take action on the coalition’s request. Council President Jasmine Flores said council members need to review what’s being proposed before taking action.
Other cities nationwide have adopted or are considering similar tenants rights bills, including Washington, D.C. and Portland, Ore. Some organizations have advocated for a national Tenants Bill of Rights.
‘We’ve done our homework’
The Very Rev. Melinda Hall, dean of Episcopal Cathedral of St. Paul, 134 W. Seventh St., presented the petition and the proposed Tenant Bill of Rights to City Council on Wednesday on the coalition’s behalf.
