Erie County burn ban remains in effect. Chief fire marshall explains why

Burns bans remain in effect for residents following back-to-back brush fires from dry weather conditions.

The City of Erie’s Chief Fire Marshall Donald Sauer said a burn ban went into effect on Wednesday, Nov. 6, in Erie County to help alleviate fires from the dry summer and fall.

Sauer added the ban is more important in the county because it is more rural than the city.

Despite the recent rainfall, Sauer said the ban is still necessary.

“It was a pretty dry summer and the falls also been pretty dry so you know when we have a wet spring or a wet summer because anywhere you walk the grass is squishy and your feet get wet and the spring was pretty wet but the summer was dry and the fall is dry and even if you get rain for a day or whatever it’s going to soak into the ground and everything is going to dry out relatively quickly,” said Sauer.

The burn ban remains in effect for Erie County until Nov. 20.
