New survey looking to update list of Erie’s historic buildings

A comprehensive resources survey is taking place in the City of Erie in an effort to update the inventory of historic buildings.

That survey took place at many locations including East and West Bayfront and downtown Erie among other locations.

The Historic Preservation Services leader said the project is currently focusing on the commercial core in downtown like the Boston Store and Warner Theatre.

“One is to help identify buildings that may not have been considered historic in the past and maybe are historic for reasons other than architecture such as their associations with famous people or events in the history of Erie or Pennsylvania but also identify buildings that may benefit from certain incentives that exist such as historic tax credits,” said Grant Johnson, historic preservation services leader for EDR.

Once this phase of the project is completed, he said conversations will take place with the City of Erie and the Historic Preservation Office to determine what comes next along with public outreach.
