If you’ve driven along the bayfront recently, you couldn’t help but see dramatic changes.
The Bayfront Central Corridor Improvement Project started in September of last year. It involves the development of roundabouts on Sassafras and Holland Streets and moving traffic underneath State Street to make it safer for pedestrians to cross.

Construction of the roundabout on Sassafras has gone smoothly and is now about half done with completion expected by mid-summer of next year.
“Roundabouts are exceptionally more efficient than a signalized intersection. I believe that they’re on action about 30% more efficient and the great benefit is they reduce fatalities by 98%,” said Justin Baker, the project manager for the Bayfront Central Corridor Improvement Project.

The State Street portion of the project has run into some challenges but Baker said the entire project is still slated for completion in 2027 as initially planned.
