Helping Erie’s homeless: annual Blizzard of Blankets event is Saturday

As frigid winter weather approaches, The Upper Room daytime homeless shelter is once again inviting the Erie community to donate blankets, coats, boots and other items to help some of the region’s most vulnerable residents.

The shelter has announced that its annual Blizzard of Blankets will take place Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon outside St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 1024 Peach St.

The Upper Room is located on the church’s second floor. The donation event dates back to 1995, the shelter’s first year of operation.

People are encouraged to bring new or clean and gently-used blankets, coats, boots and other types of winter garments. Monetary donations are welcomed as well.

Volunteers will be on hand to help people unload their donations.
