Houseboats begin to sink due to heavy snowfall

Severe weather was raising some alarms at Presque Isle State Park, where over a dozen houseboats are struggling to stay afloat.

After heavy snow piled on top of the houses at Horseshoe Pond, one houseboat is sinking under the weight into the water.

And other houseboats on the pond are also struggling to manage the weight of the snow, with parts of some platforms being submerged in the water.

One houseboat owner was called by a Presque Isle park manager to notify homeowners of the situation, and he said it was difficult to fix the problem so soon.

“Most of the houseboats, the big issue is the snow load on there and people would love to get out there and shovel snow off, but the ice isn’t great, so it’s just kind of wait, hope it melts before the next batch of snow gets here, but the big issue is we had one sink,” said Mike Hirsch, president of the Horseshoe Pond Homeowners Association.

Hirsch said there will be a lot of maintenance to do when the weather gets warmer, but it’s ultimately worth it to live on the pond.
