History made- Kayla Hawley named first female fire chief of Union City Volunteer FD

History will be made next month as the Union City Volunteer Fire Department welcomes their first female fire chief.

Kayla Hawley said she became involved in the volunteer fire department at the age of 14 in their junior program as an officer and also served the program for a time as chief.

Hawley said she is grateful to be viewed as the best fit for the position and is aware she has big shoes to fill.

She discussed what she plans to tackle once officially in the position.

“EMS is definitely a huge problem that we have the past few years it’s been heavy in the news that we are severely hurting for just funding and getting the resources that we need to be able to have services and keep providing the services we have been able to provide over the last few years,” she said.

Hawley said she will begin her new journey as the fire chief in early January of 2025.
