Erie hoping to be included in PennDOT’s 2025 railway expansion plans

People who use passenger rail services in the Erie and northwestern Pennsylvania area are asking to be included in PennDOT’s 2025 state rail plan.

Every five years, PennDOT puts together a plan to help guide investments and those who utilize services in Erie don’t want to be left out.

Lakeshore Rail Alliance details their goal for more passenger trains in summit meeting

This is such a big deal to those who take advantage of passenger trains like Amtrak because, in 2020, Erie and the surrounding region didn’t see much of a payoff.

As PennDOT looks to form it’s state rail plan, rail travel advocates are hopeful that the Erie area can be on the receiving end of improvements outlined in that plan.

“Right now, Amtrak only has one train a day each way through Erie connecting Chicago to New York, the two largest mega regions in the country. It makes sense to add more trains to that route. And for years, erie residents have been asking for train service to Pittsburgh,” said Brian Pitzer, All Aboard Erie chair and Lakeshore Rail Alliance board member.
