Man seriously injured after struck by a work van along East 12th Street in Erie

A man was critically injured late Wednesday afternoon when he was struck by a work van on East 12th Street in Erie.

The accident was reported at 5:24 p.m. Wednesday in the 700 block of East 12th Street. According to Sgt. Thomas Dunmire, an accident investigator with the Erie Bureau of Police, the victim, whose name and age were unknown Thursday morning, was wearing dark clothing after sunset and was walking around in the middle of the street when he was struck by a Spectrum internet van that was traveling west on the inside lane of East 12th Street.

The victim was knocked into the opposing lanes of traffic, Dunmire said. He was taken to UPMC Hamot with a head injury and was in a coma, he said.

The driver of the Spectrum van, who is from Michigan and was in Erie helping to restore service following last week’s snowstorm, stopped immediately and voluntarily turned over his phone and went to the hospital for a blood test, Dunmire said.
