The Burleigh Legacy Alliance was unable to do its annual recognition due to the winter weather.

In response, the city is putting a spotlight on Burleigh’s cultural and artistic success.

“You don’t find too many African Americans who have left Erie that did great things, especially nationally. He is an example to all of the young people, especially African American students here who don’t know anything about African American history,” said Johnny Johnson, president of the Burleigh Legacy Alliance.

Every year, the alliance meets with fifth graders at Pfeiffer-Burleigh to talk about his legacy.
