June trial date set for Erie man accused of fatally stabbing woman at eastside residence

A trial is set for June for an Erie man accused of fatally stabbing a woman inside their eastside home in early September.

Erie County Judge Daniel Brabender on Monday set a June 9 trial date for Joel M. Barnett, 41, who faces criminal homicide and other charges in the Sept. 5 death of 40-year-old Michelle Hanson.

Erie police accuse Barnett of stabbing Hanson several times with a long knife inside their residence at 762 E. Ninth St. before investigators said he called 911 and admitted to the stabbing.

Prosecutors are seeking a first-degree murder conviction against Barnett at trial.

Erie police charged Barnett on the day of the stabbing. He was held for court on all charges following his preliminary hearing in early November and remains in the Erie County Prison without bond.

An Erie police detective testified at the preliminary hearing that Barnett told police he and Hanson were out with others the previous evening. After they returned home, Barnett told police Hanson had been nagging him before he grabbed a knife and stabbed her, according to the testimony.
