City of Erie officials are asking people to help protect our local waterways, wildlife and in turn, Lake Erie.
They say the continued dumping of oil, chemicals and other substances into the city’s stormwater system by residents and businesses is putting our environment in jeopardy.

That’s why the city is doing what they can to prevent what’s called illicit discharge.

What’s called illicit discharge is a huge issue impacting pollution reduction efforts as people and businesses may dump things like sewage, chemicals, oil, grease, and other pollutants.

“It’s unfortunate, but if I’m out there looking for it, I can find it. You could drive around the city and you can find somebody doing something that doesn’t look right,” said Erek Iwanenko, stormwater project engineer for the City of Erie.
