Police: Child in medically induced coma after collision at Erie intersection

A one-and-a-half-year-old child is in a medically induced coma after not being properly restrained and ejected from a vehicle following a collision on East 21st and Ash streets, Erie police said.

Sgt. Thomas Dunmire Jr., a traffic investigation officer for the Erie police, said that on Sunday at 6:05 p.m. a two-vehicle crash occurred at the Erie intersection.

A white 2016 GMC Yukon with five occupants was heading eastbound on East 21st Street at an unknown high rate of speed.

A 2012 black Kia Sorento was traveling southbound on Ash Street with three occupants including a female driver, a female passenger and a one-and-a-half-year-old rear passenger.

Dunmire said that the Kia was stopped at the red light on Ash Street and started entering the intersection when the light turned green.

Just as the vehicle was exiting the intersection, the Yukon collided with the Sorento on the rear passenger side at a very high rate of speed.

The impact of the collision caused the Kia to rotate clockwise before the infant was ejected and landed on the northeast corner of the intersection. The other female passenger of the Kia was ejected and landed on the southeast corner.
