Probe ongoing in east Erie crash that seriously injured woman, toddler Sunday night

A woman and a young boy remained hospitalized on Thursday as Erie Bureau of Police accident investigators continued their probe into a violent two-vehicle crash at an east Erie intersection on Sunday night.

The woman and the 1 1/2-year-old boy were both ejected from a 2012 Kia Sorento after it collided with a 2016 GMC Yukon shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of East 21st and Ash streets. The boy was not in a car seat and the woman who was ejected was not believed to have been wearing a seat belt, Sgt. Thomas Dunmire, an accident investigator with the Erie Bureau of Police, said earlier this week.

The boy was taken to UPMC Hamot and then transferred to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, where he was placed in a medically-induced coma, Erie police reported earlier this week. The woman, whose age was not available, was taken to UPMC Hamot with injuries that included a broken back, Dunmire said Thursday.

The woman who was driving the Kia refused medical treatment, Dunmire said.
