One-year-old in medically induced coma following Sunday evening car accident

We have new information involving the Sunday night crash that seriously injured a one-year-old child and a woman after they were both ejected from their vehicle following an accident.

That crash happened at the intersection of East 21st and Ash Streets shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday night.

According to the Erie Police Department’s traffic investigation officer Sgt. Thomas Dunmire Jr., the child is now in a medically induced coma at a Pittsburgh area hospital after being ejected from the vehicle.

Dunmire also confirmed that a female passenger, who was also ejected, and the child were not properly restrained when their vehicle was hit by a speeding SUV.

The five occupants of the vehicle that caused the accident initially fled the scene but were later identified.

No charges have been filed at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.

The names of the victims have not been released.
