A fire official is reminding residents about safety tips to prevent carbon monoxide in homes.
Chief Fire Marshal Donald Sauer said every home should have a carbon monoxide detector on every level of the house.
State, local police will be out with extra patrols this New Year’s Eve
He says this is critical if homeowners have a gas-fed four-stair furnace. For those that have a boiler, a carbon monoxide detector should be wherever the boiler is located.

“Get out of the house, call 911,” Sauer said. “Also all of the fire trucks in the city have we have four gas meters so we can walk into your house use that gas meter and check to see if you have carbon monoxide in your house.”
Sauer says carbon monoxide is odorless so the detectors are crucial to alerting residents if there is a leak within the home.
