ERIE, PA – The new year is starting off snowy, windy, and it will be turning colder, too. Lake effect snow continues developing through Wednesday night into Thursday. Lake snow warnings are in effect through the weekend.
Here’s a look at the snowfall forecast through 9 p.m. Thursday. Keep in mind that it will still be snowing at times through the weekend and there will be additional snow accumulation.
Local lake effect snow bands will impact the region Wednesday night into Thursday, but this will not be everywhere. Several inches will pile up by this weekend, especially near the I-90 ridge and in the higher elevation south/east.
The winds will fluctuate a little, but the highest snow amounts will occur wherever the lake snow bands are most intense. Watch out for blowing snow in sustained areas of lake snow, especially in the countryside.
Aside from the lake flakes, bitter cold air filters into the region and it turns progressively colder over the next several days. This will keep areas of lake effect snow and snow showers around for much of next week. A larger storm system with widespread snow misses us to the South early next week.
