Erie youth bowlers shoot for scholarship money at annual tournament

Youth bowlers put their skills to the test Sunday in hopes of bringing home some scholarship money.

Over 30 bowlers spent their Sunday shooting for strikes at Eastway Lanes, but only a few will come away a champion.

The NWPA United States Bowling Congress (USBC) hosted its 21st annual scholarship singles tournament on Sunday, inviting youth bowlers of all ages to compete for the gold.

Over 30 young athletes came to Eastway Lanes on Buffalo Road for a chance to win 500 dollars of scholarship money.

“It’s a great opportunity. The bowlers can use this money to further their education. We enjoy using this money, we get donations to promote youth bowling. It’s a lifelong sport and hopefully, it carries over as adults,” said Brett Rearick, NWPA USBC president.

Participants competed in four divisions — boys and girls over 12 years old and under 12 years old.

The younger bowlers played a total of three games, whereas the older competitors went head-to-head in five games and whoever knocks down the most total pins at the end in their respective division wins the scholarship.
