Man and woman critically injured, 3 pets die in house fire at east Erie residence

Careless smoking is suspected in a Wednesday morning fire on Erie’s east side that critically injured two people and killed three pets.

The victims, a man and a woman who authorities said are between 70 and 80 years old, were rescued from the fire at 723 E. 12th St. after the fire was first reported on Wednesday at 8:14 a.m.

Multiple people called 911 to report the fire, and some witnesses heard a woman in the back of the bungalow-style house and were able to locate her, Erie Bureau of Fire Fire Marshal Chris White said.
