Plans moving ahead to convert former ESD admin building to housing for homeless

The Hamot Foundation’s BUILD Community Development Corporation is moving forward with plans to convert the former Erie Schools Administration Building into permanent supportive housing for Erie’s chronically homeless.

The project aims to transform the four-story brick building at 21st and Sassafras Streets into 22 apartments with 12,000 square feet of commercial space and support services. However, financing remains a significant challenge, with a $6 million funding gap still to be addressed.

“Getting all our blueprints in order to make sure the space is trauma-informed design so that our individuals can be served appropriately,” said Hannah Moran, Project Manager at BUILD CDC. “And then we have been building our capital stack over the last year and making sure we’re ready to hit the ground running.”

Kim Thomas, Executive Director of Infinite Erie, noted, “We are working hard to secure the financing needed for this project.”…
