Erie Zoo shares how they help animals beat the heat

Animals at the Erie Zoo are being kept cool during a heat wave, thanks to creative efforts by zoo staff to ensure their safety and comfort.

As temperatures soar, the Erie Zoo is taking measures to protect its animals, particularly those not accustomed to the heat. Zoo staff have implemented various strategies to keep the animals cool, including the use of mist devices, pools, fans, and frozen treats.

“Things like our lions, the rhinos, zebras, warthogs, the African savannah is well over 100 on a regular basis during the hot season. Those guys can tolerate quite a bit,” said Scott Mitchell, Development Director at Erie Zoo.

For animals that thrive in cooler climates, such as the Amur tiger and Canada Lynx, special care is taken to ensure they remain comfortable. These animals have the option to stay indoors, where they can rest on marble slabs kept in a freezer…
