PennDOT promotes bike safety for young riders at bike rodeo

Young bike riders brought their wheels to a local middle school Tuesday evening for a lesson in bicycle safety.

PennDOT hosted a bicycle rodeo at East Middle School to encourage safe riding habits this summer.

Bike riders navigated through obstacle courses, teaching them safety skills such as keeping balance, weaving through turns and using the proper hand signals.

Inside the gymnasium, several organizations set up tables to further educate children on bike safety. One PennDOT official said the goal is to keep roads as safe as possible.

“When people are out riding their bike, there’s things they can do to stay safe, and one of those is wearing bright colored clothing so they’re visible, they’re being predictable and following all the state’s laws. It’s all the things that we cover at an event like today, and hopefully, that reduces the potential risk of a crash.
