(WJET/WFXP)– PennDOT has decided to close part of the Bayfront Parkway after Labor Day for about one year to avoid delays on the Bayfront Parkway Project.
The stretch of the Bayfront Parkway between Sassafras Street Extension and Holland Street for 12 to 14 months starting on or near September 2, which PennDOT plans on using to get serious work done, especially near State Street.
During the closing, PennDOT plans on making the State Street intersection grade-separated with lanes to take through traffic beneath the intersection, shorter crosswalks across the parkway, and new traffic signals. Crews will also be preparing to add a roundabout and pedestrian bridge at the Holland Street intersection.

In light of this, they’re recommending drivers use 12th Street as a detour to get through the city, and to use any other alternate routes as the closure gets closer to get used to the shift in traffic.
Drivers will still be able to access waterfront businesses using East Front Street and West Front Street Extension. The closure will not impact the Tall Ships Festival planned for August 21-24…
