Housing the homeless – community leaders look to transform old buildings for those in need

Almost every city has vacant buildings lying around, but some local organizations are finding ways to make the most of those unused spaces in the City of Erie.

Three community leaders have announced plans to turn the former Washington School, St. Paul Parish Center and Sacred Heart School into housing units for the homeless, and the work is already underway.

“We have buildings in our community that are vacant, and what we have been able to accomplish at the Mercy Anchor Community Center, which was the former Holy Rosary School building, has really triggered our minds that we should be doing more,” said Jennie Hagerty, Executive Director of the Mercy Center for Women.
