Erie police release first half of 2025 crime stats, marks drop in violent crime

Violent crimes are down, but general thefts are up in the City of Erie, that’s according to a crime statistics report released by Chief of Police Dan Spizarny Thursday morning.

The chief came to Mayor Joe Schember’s weekly press conference on Thursday, detailing city crime statistics from the first half of 2025.

According to the city’s report, there have been two homicides thus far in 2025. This rate remains within the normal range of homicides for the last five years.

But Police Chief Dan Spizarny said general thefts have been on the rise, and the police department is looking to reduce that increase.

“Overall, we just looked at our 11-year progress, and we are at the lowest amounts of violent crime in the past 11 years. It’s significantly down,” Chief Spizarny said.
