Four Erie grocery markets awarded grants for fresh food expansion

(WJET/WFXP)– Four local grocery markets recently received a boost in funding to help the neighborhoods they supply have access to fresh, affordable food.

The funding comes from the newest round of grants issued by the Pennsylvania Fresh Food Initiative to 13 grocery markets that all take SNAP and WIC to ensure low and moderate-income families have access to fresh food.

The Food Trust, which partnered with the Community Development Financial Institutions and the PA Department of Community and Economic Development, said each of the awardees is in areas where families don’t have the same access to affordable groceries, but still have strong support from local customers.

“For over three decades, we have fought for communities’ ability to find, afford and learn about the foods that support our health and bring us joy,” says Mark Edwards, President & CEO of The Food Trust. “By granting funds to healthy food retailers across the commonwealth through the Pennsylvania Fresh Food Financing Initiative, we are not only improving health outcomes for shoppers, but we’re also supporting the local economy by boosting retailers’ revenue, adding valuable job opportunities for neighborhood residents, and giving farmers new business opportunities. It’s a clear triple win, and The Food Trust is a proud partner in this effort.”
